Intro
Modern exhaust systems are a very advanced combination of the outlet manifold, the catalytic converter, the silencer and the exhaust pipe. Here at Centurion Lake Auto Service Centre, we can check your exhaust system to make sure that it is in perfect working order. Your car's exhaust system has a direct impact on the fuel efficiency of your vehicle as well as it's performance. We can also run an emissions test to ensure your vehicle is running cleanly and as fuel efficient as possible.
The Exhaust System's noise level
All internal combustion engines produces "exhaust noise" due to the emission of gases from the cylinders. Reducing the sound energy of the exhaust flow helps to silence the noise. Two basic options are generally combined and used in the exhaust system. Absorption and reflection of the sound.
Exhaust chambers and exhaust flaps are other sound-absorbing and sound-modifying elements that can be used to eliminate especially undesirable frequencies from the outlet noise.
Vibrations in the Exhaust System
The exhaust system is subject to vibration, it produces noise through natural frequencies and vibration which could be transmitted to the car body.
The exhaust system therefore requires careful design and positioning of the individual elements and their flexible mountings to prevent this vibration to felt in the car.
Extreme Stresses
The exhaust system is subject to extreme stresses. The fuel-air mixture in the cylinders creates instantly temperatures of up to 2,400 °C. This causes the gasses to expand greatly before escaping into the exhaust system at ultra high speeds. This noise level resembles the crack of an explosion and must be reduced by approx. 50 dB(A) as it travels from the engine exhaust valve to the end of the exhaust system.
